I'm going to gave event like cards (I think), but I guess the problem was the variables the events would manipulate weren't dynamic or interesting? The whole sub-system felt like something that would work in a multilayer game, but not a single player game.
To make mine a bit more dynamic I created effects which would affect adjacent cards, rearrange cards and such. I wanted surprises without too much upkeep/memorizing.
