Please come to Dublin, bring Vinhos! I'd love to try it.
Well spotted, even without the name on the box! I'd definitely like to play it more. Viticulture felt very shallow in comparison.
I've heard it's one of Vital's best. I didn't think Viticulture was anything special either. Maybe if I'd played it when it was first released I'd feel differently? I played it twice in one night, and I'd be OK to never play it again.
I played a first edition version of Viticulture and it had a lot of issues. We played it a few times and strongly disliked it.
I played the updated edition which has been very well received but there was nothing that stood out, especially after playing Vinhos.
I've not played Vinhos, so I don't know what I'm missing, but FWIW for me Viticulture went from "it's OK" to "I quite enjoy this" with the Tuscany expanded board.
It helps that it's one of the few games my wife sometimes actually asks to play! It's certainly hard to recommend it to anyone on the basis of the expanded board given the cost to joy ratio.
Do you know if the board in the Essential edition is already the expanded board? Because that might have been the one I played.
It's not. From what I can see on BGG "Essential Edition" is basically the base game with the most superficial extras from Tuscany - variable starting resources, a couple of extra early-start options, nothing much really different.
What a confusing branding. It even makes it harder to talk about the game.
The game has several editions, expansions, and modules, which to me is all sorta just not a good sign.
Yeah. Tuscany was a mess - there's about three really actually essential expansions in there (IMO) and a lot of for-the-sake-of-it stuff - and then when they did the Essential Edition they kept the bits that are easy to introduce rather than the bits that improve the game.
