What's the weirdest grid you've seen on a RnW game? I've been enjoying Cairo Corridor recently and it's been making me wonder if there's a useful application for pentagons or other weird grids of tessellation.

I think so. Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space uses a hex grid to define level layouts but they could have any other shape and it wouldn't mess with the rules too much as long as humans still move 1 space and aliens move 1-2.pic.twitter.com/Q6o1eu4FZl

But hexes make for very nice movement. Squares have the benefit of simplicity. Hexes offer the most-natural-feeling (and understandable) movement. I am wondering if we could have pentagons/trapezoids/or weirder things not JUST as a gimmick, but using their unique advantages.

Absolutely, but at a certain point I think I would move towards point-to-point and defined areas like the board in Unmatched for the freedom.

What if you were using tessellated fish/birds for thematic reasons? Maybe a game about some inter-species battle.

Should I be paying Escher's estate if I wanted to make a game based off this?

Either them or a lawyer who specializes in those types of claims to know how different yours has to be. But you're right, that piece always looked like a board. :)

I'd rather obey the laws of morality than legality. It's just a bit harder to work out those rules.

Oh, absolutely. But my second priority would be to avoid making a very costly mistake.
