Every once in a while I meet a designer that claims their game occurred to them fully formed and they didn't have to make a change. I don't believe it for a second.https://twitter.com/ReinerKnizia/status/1166628251097284612 …

Playtesting 3. Regardless of how much experience you have, you cannot develop a game on the drawing board – only at the playing table.

Every single game I design comes to mind fully formed... ...and then it hits the table and its inevitably shit.

That's the first step, and it points to what you should fix next. It's very unlikely you'll be able to get to the end of a game the first time you play it. Don't let that discourage you! :)

I has a good chat with @robinwriting about me and game design. I tend to get discouraged quite easily, especially when I don't make it to the playtest events, partially because I think I have too much time to mull over the problems rather than iterate and fix them! 😅

One thing that might help, if the game allows for that, is to have a solo mode where you can test the changes anytime you need.

That is absolutely something I need to get better at. I've never been strong at sitting down and playing a game through on my own, even a published game to try learn the rules.
