Every now and then I re-download Candy Crush. Today was one of those days. It's weird to see how as the game updates it moves further towards auto-playing levels for you. It was never the most intense puzzle game but occasionally levels would require a little thought.

Now I feel like I only make 3 - 4 moves and the game auto finishes it all with mythical specials to get to a ridiculous max high score. It feels like the natural end point for a style of game based on drip feeding achievement and a sense of progression to players

But it also can't be that satisfying. Games aren't about just getting things, even ftp's are about doing something well/right that gives an award. So the achievements feel unearned?

I wonder if it's just that players have moved past feeling a need to invest effort into the level for a real sense of achievement when they've already invested so much time that progression based on that is achievement enough.

If the difficulty was constantly going up it would frustrate a lot of the players so the difficulty curve has regular bumps where the levels are challenging, then the next are a cakewalk.

yeah... but I started back on level 100 or so, I remember roughly the level of difficulty I stopped playing at, and I'm not exaggerating to say I won a level today by matching one combo and it autocompleted.

There's not increasing difficulty and then there's toning it down to easier than a tutorial. There's not even a pseudo challenge there

Ouch, that sounds really condescending. :(

Just re-read it and realized how this can be misinterpreted. I meant playing it must have felt condescending!

oh don't worry that's how I took it :) and yeah, I was expecting some mindless swiping but having the game play the level for me was, like, seriously?
