If designers and publishers are aware they can turn it in their favor, and there is a real chance players would still be able to play it long after it's out of print. 7/7

This is why I release most of my games as PNPs. It's worked well - Tag City came from the success of BentoBlocks. And that's why I've done so much with roll and writes lately - they're super easy to DIY. I'd be surprised if it ever backfired.

Good point! I stopped releasing PNPs when I started working with a publisher but I really want to continue.

I don't do as many as I would like any more, but I did release a roll and write about a month back. It can be frustrating though - some do really well off very little work (like the Ada Lovelace game) and some take LOADS of work and there's just crickets...

One thing that worked in my favor was designing as part of an online contest since there were already eyes looking in that direction.

Yeah, I quite enjoy doing that and realise that in the past it was a little unwise to release PNPs at random! I am feeling a little burned by the most recent contest I did, where the "Best multiplayer game" was won by a solitaire game.

The organiser said it was entered into that category by mistake, but it still won enough votes to win that category. Soooo... that seems kinda fishy.

Any multiplayer-only game should be disqualified for that category. Sounds like that is amplifying the worst part of the contests, which is the popularity/signal boost.

EXACTLY! I came away from it just a bit gutted that it came down to a popularity contest. Sorry, looks like you caught me in a grumpy mood this morning!

No problem, I would have been grumpy too!
