I'm not that familiar with tabletop RPGs because the ones I knew (mostly D&D or inspired by it) are more focused on the minutiae of combat than on storytelling but lately I've been reading about other game systems that sound really fascinating.

Dread has a really cool approach to checks where it replaces dice rolling with Jenga. When characters do something dangerous the players pull a block and place it on top of the tower. It gets increasingly tense, because when the tower falls, the character dies! Elegant.

The one I'm looking into at the moment is Fate Accelerated, which looks fantastic and really accessible. The rules empower everyone to participate actively in the storytelling and you can use whatever setting you like. The rulebook is 5$ or can be downloaded for free.

When I was really fascinated by D&D the three core books were 25 euros each! I saved for a long time to get them, and only was able to play it a handful of times, always an intro quest with a different group.

I spent a lot more time reading the rulebooks by myself, but they really captured my imagination. It was a window into another world.
