I've been reading a new (to me) author recently and happened to read their series in reverse chronological order, it's pretty encouraging to see that their first series - while good- isn't nearly as mindblowingly awesome as their latest one.

Not to bash the author in anyway. It's a nice reminder when you read something amazing and feel you could never do that, to be able to see that even that author couldn't do that when they started.

I often hear that about Discworld novels, that they get great after a while, so the first published book is not the best place to start.

Definitely agree with that. I started with middle Discworld by accident, not sure I would have read them all if I started with the early ones. Same with the author right now actually, if I'd read the first book first I probably wouldn't have read their others.

I didn't take that advice and it took me forever to get through it! :D
