For someone that considers themselves outgoing, playing games with strangers is an absolute terror. Ariel is an introvert and she thinks it's great, and I am petrified by the concept. Unless it's a tournament format.

Interesting that the tournaments don't have the same reaction. Is it because you know you have something in common with them, otherwise they wouldn't be there?

Probably that, more organized, set up, and I know going in. I also know that even if I don't like the person I only play them once. I'm so worried about meeting terrible people.

That makes sense! I can imagine the length tournament matches are quicker than a good portion of the popular board games out there. You don't want to get stuck in a random 6h game with terrible people.
