Admittedly I get a little annoyed when super famous rock stars put up Patreon’s. You’re already rich and famous with a net worth of $20+ million dollars. 
It's more than a marketing stunt. It gives them a better idea of how many copies they should print. If they print too many or too few, that's going to cost them a log of money, likely well beyond KS's share.

Still a seemingly large waste of 8% of millions. If, say, CMON suddenly said “no more Kickstarter, we have our own new online preorder system” on their website, they’d maybe lose some people to lower visibility, but they’d also only pay 2% in processing fees.

I’m probably wrong. Big companies continue to use Kickstarter, and they employee smart financial people (I hope) which means there must be a reason it continues to exist. Or the current publishing system is lazy and doesn’t want to change.
