How important is a good rulebook? I've been answering the same BGG questions for 4 years.

Essential ofc, but what's really baking my noodle is 'How much of game design and rules should you sacrifice to achieve a good rule book?'

I have never sacrificed parts of a game so that the rulebook would be better, but I have removed/changed parts that were hard to explain because they showed that their design was rough, which resulted in a better rulebook.

I tend to go by removing anything that you can remove, in pursuit of elegance, which also has the benefit of simplifying the rule book. I guess I feel that the rule book is just another reason to avoid bloat. But lately I’ve actually been curious abt trying to make a big game.

I'm on the opposite end of that. Wrapping up my biggest game, longing for something new, simple and short. :) I do have a big idea I go back to every so often...

After that experience of a big game, how should it be approached? Any pointers or pitfalls?

Don't announce it too early. Make sure the roles and responsibilities are well defined early on between you and the publisher. If it's going to KS, don't design the game to be airtight because there's a good chance you might have to come up with extra content for stretch goals.

Ah, nah I only make half finished prototypes and test on my ungrateful friends. Publishers and externals are not an issue. :)

Now that I think of it, there was a game where I didn't want to have more than a double-sided A4 worth of rules + diagrams, but I don't think it was a good idea since it's the game that prompted this thread.

If it was me finding I need 2 A4 of rules, I would absolutely trim base rules and put more into cards.

I did that and also published a rules explanation video to show what it was like "in action". It definitely helped!
