Why is it so hard in 20 friggin 19 to use phrases like “The Player...” or “When they...” or “Their pieces...”? Why do my rulebooks just presume the reader is male? My daughter and I are continuously frustrated by this when it seems so easy to resolve.

And it’s so easy to write gender neutral. SO easy. It’s no more effort. When I’m writing a tutorial script, it’s effortless to make it gender neutral. I want every viewer to feel like I could be talking to them. Why doesn’t a publisher want their rules to feel that way? Weird.

For North Americans, yes, it’s easy. Translating rules from some European countries becomes hard. Believe me, I’ve published. With many countries using masculine/feminine forms of words, & some countries utilizing masculine as both it & neutral, it’s not “that” easy sometimes.

I'm confused. This tweet seems to answer your initial tweet where you asked why pubs don't all use gender neutral terms.

If it’s cultural acceptable in the country of origin, sure. But if you’re translating, it just means there’s work and awareness involved. My question is why don’t more publishers care about that latter part.

I see. That makes more sense. I wonder how much the larger community of BGers (not just those online) take notice of it or pass it by because "he" has been the accepted term for so long.

I’m sure there are many people that it doesn’t phase in the slightest. I just find it odd to pick a gender perspective for a ruleset intended for a general audience. I can’t see a good reason to do it. Others may not care one way or the other. Just speaking for myself here.

I've only had a single negative experience with such a rulebook, and it was simply due to how it was written. At a certain point there was a reward and the word "they" suggested more players were getting the reward as well. We watched a video to clarify. Practice makes perfect!

"They" may be the trickiest word in gaming rules. :)
