When we went to pick up our dog from a similar surgery the vet called us to look at the removed ovaries and showed us traces of the six pups she'd had recently. The smallest trace turned out to be the smallest pup. (Sorry, I'm not sure of the right terms in English)

It's hard to describe but basically the ovaries were there on a metal plate, split in half. You could see what I assume were the fertilized eggs, like tiny peas in a pod.

And the vet was pointing at them, asked if one of the pups was very small and weak. Yes it was. He pointed at one of the eggs and said. "It's that one". That image stayed with me.

The procedure happened soon after the birth, don't know how long they would have stayed. Still, don't take my word for it, I was very young and English is not my main language so I might have said something wrong. :)
