I haven't felt like playing a JRPG for over 12 years but the sleep function on the Switch is making me reconsider. What happened to the genre since? Is there anything out there without random encounters and endless grinding? That's what pushed me away.

Ooh, I still love JRPGs. I haven't found anything on the Switch that I adore just yet, but if Bravely Default, Persona 5, or an older-style Paper Mario game make their way onto the Switch, those would be great choices.

I've been playing Octopath Traveler and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on the Switch, and both have been mediocre for me, personally. Final Fantasy X is coming, though! It does have random encounters, but the mechanics and story are still great.

There hasn't been much that caught my eye other than ports but I'll try some demos: - Octopath Traveler, which looks pretty but I'm afraid its mechanics are everything I dislike in the genre. - FFXV Pocket Edition, which cuts a lot of things but seems to keep what I want. :)

Octopath definitely suffers from outdated JRPG mechanics.
It's sad because the same studio made Bravely Default, which was like a JRPG revolution. But I hope you like the demo!1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

I admit I tried both (OT and BD) months ago and really wasn't in the mood, but I'll try again. I'm glad the demos are available as these games are usually both long and expensive.

For sure. The beauty of Bravely Default, for me, came when I found out that you can speed up battles by like 400% and enable auto-battle with a specific set of moves. It became almost like a JRPG sim.
Plus turn the encounter rate to 0% at any time from the menu.

Wow, both of those sound really good. Didn't know the game gave you that much control.

Yeah! It's super great. I wish they made those options more obvious in the game and the marketing.

It would have certainly caught my attention.
