They could work, but when the game moves your point of view as you're standing still it's very nauseating. SUPERHOT VR does it well by fading you from one spot to the next.

Oh, I've thought of a couple of tricks to reduce or remove nausea in VR FPS games, that I still haven't seen applied — for other reasons than "it doesn't work". :)

I'm sure there's many solutions you've never seen, not because they weren't tried but because they weren't fit for a public release. :)
