Manuel Correia added,
Maybe I’m missing some vital piece of information but all I see are the bad parts of ccgs but on steroids. Fascinating from a dev perspective but how on earth will the most competitive be able to play this without massive spending?
It's not a game for the most competitive. It's a game for the people who enjoy discovering the game, and playing against those who do too, without running into players who copy deck lists online or win simply because they've poured in more money and time.
That's what GW thought they could get away with by refusing to set clear rules. It's like saying you'll make an MMO but not for griefers. By logic, if the decks are at differing value (win-wise), then some will buy many decks to find one that wins a lot, no? I hope I'm wrong. :)
This game has clear rules. I've been playing it online and its design is solid. Sure, some players will buy a lot expecting better decks, but each deck has a QR code you enter when participating in tournaments and you get a handicap if it has won too many times.
I suppose the handicap thing is the piece of information I missed, but I'm not convinced it'll work. People want to win outside of tournaments as well. In other handicap systems, you still have to get the best equipment to be the champion.
Yes, I'm sure some players will take it too seriously but the chance I'll run into them is much smaller here and that immediately makes it more appealing to me and a lot of others who burned out on Magic.
Just the fact you're not allowed to build decks is already pushing a lot of CCG players away and that's fine, there are plenty of other games for them.
