I'm not totally sure what I'm looking for, to be honest. Warhammer always seemed intimidating from the outside but I peek in sometimes and I loved some of the videogames (and Warhammer Diskwars!).

I tried reading a bit of Horus Rising and couldn't get into it and I completely missed the End Times, which sound like a fascinating time to catch up on.

That's fair enough, there's a lot of assumed knowledge with some of the Warhammer books. Personally I don't think the Heresy is a good place to start, as some 40k knowledge helps with that series. What sort of books/authors do you like generally? Do you prefer fantasy or sci-fi?

I would say fantasy but I read so much already that it's hard to get excited anymore. Currently catching up on sci fi classics like Hyperion, Ubik, Dune.

Ok. For Age of Sigmar I'd say get Hammerhal & Other stories and see if any of the factions/races pique your interest. In the various stories you'll be introduced to Stormcast, Nurgle, Sylvaneth, Fyreslayers, Skaven etc. All based on familiar fantasy tropes, but Warhammer-ified.

If any of those capture your imagination, you'll be able to find stories that dig a bit more into them and give you more detail. I think short stories are a good way of trying things out, to see what - if anything - you find interesting.

For 40k the same applies with Crusade + Other Stories OR you could go with the book that most people suggest as the best way to get into it: Xenos by Dan Abnett. It's less focused on the WAR of warhammer & explores the tone and feel of the setting with great, relatable characters

Are you in Stockholm? I imagine https://www.sfbok.se/ will stock Black Library books. I visited that shop a couple of years ago, and LOVED it :)
