All the Essen game descriptions start with vibrant, enticing intros: "Your father was a mobster, your grandfather was a mobster, and now you're a violinist. Can you save your cousin/lover from her heroin addiction?" Then ruin it all with: "The goal is to get the most points".

I've wondered about a hybrid; "game ends when condition XYZ is met, if so, that person win, else end after 14 rounds and sum points" but acquiring points doesn't further your progress to XYZ. Or "player A wins w/ condition XYZ but B/C win on points if the game doesn't end early."

I could see that working well in a Bank Robbery game. If the cop player catches the thieves, the cop wins. It the thieves escape, whoever made it out with the most money wins.
