A good theme ideally makes the mechanisms more clear. If a game has logistics, siege warfare, artillery and cavalry like content, then bird fights, dance battles, and love triangles don’t clarify. Instead, they paint over and confuse.

My go-to example was a game about cats doing mischief around an apartment, which played like a heavy wargame with area control, monitoring stamina points and everything.
