There's a paradox about game series that focus on discovery and exploration. They're fine as a single game but once you have to make a sequel you run the risk of repeating the same cues, abilities and gear.

Play enough of them and the patterns become clear. You see a crack on a wall and you know you'll have to come back once you get the bombs. You're not discovering anymore.

You're just going through the motions, expecting something else will surprise you, within that mold. There's fewer room to innovate.

They're doomed if they don't change, but the fans will be upset if they do. As a designer, developing a sequel for one of those sounds claustrophobic.

All this to say that if you like games about discovery and exploration, you should should definitely look outside of established franchises. I'm currently enamored by Hollow Knight.pic.twitter.com/9RL9yyiecB

If you mean Dark Souls then it's not as hard, except for this one mandatory boss fight later on.

it's very very hard. Everyone in the flat was frustrated to the point where seeing someone play would cause anxiety...

I'm ok with difficulty. My main worry would be how punishing it is, how much progress is thrown out the window with each mistake.
