Handicaps in games! What are your thoughts? If you are better at a game, are you happy to take a handicap? If you are a newbie, how do you feel about a handicap? Do you avoid them? Seek them out? Maybe even invent your own? More detailed replies/comments/thoughts very welcome.

I appreciate when they're available. I've tried using unusual and unlikely strategies in order to even out the game so I ended up creating some handicaps instead of looking for custom made ones.

It sounds like you'd like designers always to include them? Maybe handicaps will be the next 'solo mode' - something that's almost expected at a certain level.

I would like those but I'm not sure if they're a selling point unless the game is very competitive. Go is a good example. The tricky think I found about handicaps is that the other players don't want me to use them because they feel like I'm admitting they're not as good at it.

One I appreciate is the skeleton hero in Catacombs 3rd Ed because it's one of the valid choices from the start. It doesn't have a big active skill, just can't be poisoned.

I don't know that hero! Only played the older Catacombs game. Are you saying it's a 'secret' handicap that you can choose?

I'd say so! It's the hero that nobody ever picks because it doesn't do anything flashy and there might not be any poison enemies in the dungeon.

When teaching the game I prefer to be the overlord. It's a 1 vs all so the new players really want to gang up and defeat me. If they insist of me a hero I pick that one. There's also a chicken that just runs around but it's a bit more useful because it bumps enemies around.
