I think almost every question that gets asked in the Game Designer Facebook groups can be answered with, "It depends on what game you're making." Should I let players draft action cards at the start? Should I change VP for currency? etc. etc. etc.

Yeah, I see it on writing forums too. I also think it stems from some people thinking the creative task is easy. As if you can design something good from a formula. Or write something good from a formula. It's just a case of figuring out that formula...

Most likely! But even when they do, I don't find it that helpful, if it pertains to mechanics or player experience. I find that mostly you really need to engage with a game to offer really useful advice on it.
