As per previous feedback on similar matters: Linux, GNOME/KDE, just like infrastructural software aren't representative of the whole open source ecosystem.

So how would you propose to fund those other parts of the ecosystem? Infra is perhaps easier because it has broad adoption (or can), whereas higher up the stack comes with no guarantee that there's enough of a population to pay for it...

Unless for some reason they can benefit from the few patronage initiatives out there (e.g. @linuxfoundation CII, https://pineapplefund.org/ ) I believe their only options is to become their own bosses.
