What survival strategies do butterflies have in the face of the fires in Australia? Check this footage out from Long Swamp in Lithgow. Julie Favell was putting out water for wildlife that may have survived the massive inferno & witnessed butterflies in a moist wombat hole.

On cows and carbon sequestration. There is a lot of confusion on Twitter about the role of ruminants in producing greenhouse gases (bad) versus helping to sequester (store) carbon in soil (good). I thought a short summary of the state of knowledge might help:

Happy new year! Very pleased to say our review was published over the Christmas break - here, we evaluate whether non-invasive urine sampling is currently exploited to its full potential in the development of diagnostic tools for human helminth infections

The importance of thematic session on embracing the temporal dimension of ecology perfectly summarised by first slide: Also learnt tree rings can identify short term infrequent events (in 1660s+1774!!) that change ecosystem trajectories for centuries! – mjesto: Waterfront Hall

Can we estimate 100+ years of species trends from natural history collections? Yes we can! delegates can visit me at H2.7 between 17.30-19.00 today to hear how, and find out how UK and social wasps have fared 🦋🐛

Fantastic talk highlighting the importance of fieldwork and modern data to explore causative effects of temperature on butterflies - would be impossible for my work on long term (100+ yrs) effect of climate on leps using natural history collections 👏🦋

”41% of UK species have declined since 1970s”. 1970s postdates most large-scale transformations of the UK landscape but we don’t have the methods to understand earlier declines *yet*. Imagine how sobering the number would be if 1900, or even 1950, was our baseline.

Scientists recently discovered a new species of swallowtail butterfly on a Fijian island. Papilio natewa is such a remarkable butterfly that scientists are wondering how it has gone unnoticed for so long.
