There is much to celebrate from last nights Hugo awards: The well-deserving winners made brilliant speeches. The base of the award was gorgeous and thoughtful and well-crafted. There was righteous fury on display.

I personally got to witness members of a vibrant SFF community supporting each other in their hurt, confusion, outrage, and victory last night. That's what I keep hanging on to, because that's how you build a future together.

Anyway fuck the Old Guard of SFF, snatch the world out of their grasping hands and leave them to continue whispering their tepid histories into their own navels. They will devour themselves, and we will build beautiful things on top of their shod exoskeletons.

It's like Martin wanted to demonstrate to the entire world *why* I've always thought of him as an unprofessional jerk, but decided that wasn't going far enough.

The segments were prerecorded. This was PREVENTABLE. The way for the old guard to remain relevant is for them to remain CURRENT, not to wallow in the memories of past inglory.

Yes, the winners were fantastic and the technical side remarkable (under the circumstances) but the *tone*... Respecting history is one thing but these should be living, vibrant awards that are about what's happening NOW, not mired in who changed the font in 1972.

The captions last nights were just too perfect. (I don’t know Robert Silverberg from Adam and don’t have any opinions on him or his work. But I have a *slew* of screencaps like this and making them got me through the show between announcements and acceptance speeches.)pic.twitter.com/EwhBvI0dMp
