Sauron was wearing and wielding the One Ring while on Numenor. Just sayin’….

It involves Sauron, though, so it’s at least related to the history of how the ring came to be forged.

The fall of Numenor came about literally because of the machinations and maneuverings of the Lord of the Rings and was actually fleshed out by Tolkien. The story of the betrayal and fall of Eregion was never really written beyond a few sentences.

The fall of Numenor is generically archetypical enough that a lot of good story can be fleshed out from its bones.

Personally I'd rather see them go back even further and start with individual anthology seasons on Beren & Luthien, Turin, and Gondolin, then move into the Second Age.
