Unist’ot’en camp spokesperson Freda Huson says she welcomes the opportunity to shed light on what is happening on her territory. “I’ve been waiting for this day. The UN’s watching. The whole world is watching.”

Yet another fossil fuel CEO promising to be “carbon neutral by 2050”. Promising without a plan while growing carbon pollution & building new projects which lock in greater fossil fuel production and emissions is not good enough.

Vice journalist Jesse Winter was at the camp at 39KM when the RCMP raided it before dawn. He was arrested by the RCMP and released in a random parking lot far from the area. This is a clear police restriction on press freedom.

So justify today's RCMP action however you want, invoke the "rule of law" as much as you like. But at least recognize that Canada's legal claims to Wet’suwet’en territory are the product of an entire system of violent anti-Indigenous racism.

Update: The Vice journalist has been released - Far from the scene. Combined with their attempts last night to turn our journalist back at their checkpoint, it seems RCMP are trying to keep media from reporting on the raid.

THIS is canada. Criminalizing Indigenous peoples in order to have access to their relatives (including land and territory) is violent colonialism.

Journalists at 39 km were detained, not arrested. I’ve never encountered officers controlling what elements of their action journalists are “allowed” to photograph.

These are soldiers, not cops, taking Indigenous land at gunpoint. No treaty, no bill of sale, no surrender of this land has ever occurred. Canadian colonialism laid bare. Two more camps await this violence. All eyes on

Canada was built on the removal of Indigenous people from our lands for free and unfettered access to resources. Nothing has changed.
