30 years ago, I lived in London and worked at a Pizza Hut near Trafalgar Square. During my breaks I’d go to the National Gallery and sit in front of a painting of a lady in a white dress. The Gallery has all its catalogue online, so I thought it’d be easy to find it. It wasn’t.

CES coverage I don't find useful: Hearing that it's changed and they're lots of ppl and food (we know); all the gear you brought (duh); that the tech is the same as last year (look for improvements, progress, trends & don't be cynical); and anything Vegas (we don't care). #CES

Y le hubiera rogado que no cayera en el recurso facilón de poner al protagonista en coma y sugerir que todo fue un sueño. Siempre es mejor ir con la cuarta o quinta idea; rara vez con la primera, que frecuentemente tiende al cliché.

moderarse en su uso de los recursos visuales y efectos especiales (innecesarios). También, le hubiera dicho que se atreviera a hacerla más autobiográfica (como Roma), y ser más directo con sus críticas (a Televisa, por ejemplo) y sus comentarios sociales...

En fin, siento que Bardo es un primer tratamiento de lo que pudo ser una gran película. De haber visto ese boceto, le hubiera sugerido al director confiar en la carga dramática de su narrativas e ideas, pulir los diálogos (que están sobreescritos)...

Pero una y otra vez, cuando logré enchufarme con el tema, el director volvió a su zona de confort: cinematografía magnánima, escenas surrealistas e imágenes digeridas, como si no confiara en las palabras que puso en la boca de los actores.

Todos estos temas tienen su espacio en Bardo y, en la mayoría de los casos, tuvieron en mí un mayor impacto en escenas simples y directas, como cuando el hijo confronta (en inglés) al protagonista durante el desayuno, cuestionando su mexicanismo.

La relación con hijos que crecieron en otras culturas, la pérdida de un hijo, la relación con la familia a la distancia, la relación con los padres en la edad adulta, el éxito, las amistades adultas, etc.

El juego le permite al director jugar con humor y el absurdo, pero diluye el impacto de sus ideas y emociones. Y hay muchas ideas importantes: la identidad del inmigrante, la identidad del mexicano de clase media, el retorno a la madre patria (homeland, como se dice en inglés)...

Creo que Iñárritu se dejó influenciar mucho por Roma e intentó hacer una anti-Roma. Donde la cinta de Cuarón es hiper-realista, Bardo navega entre lo real y lo imaginado -- o soñado, como propone al final. Esa incertidumbre genera una enorme distancia dramática.

Ya vi Bardo, amigos. El filme me es muy familiar porque yo también son un inmigrante mexicano de clase media alta con hijos biculturales y más de 20 años en EEUU. Me identificó con muchos de los temas de la cinta.
