"What are these tech giants after?" is the BIG picture question. It is the battle for the future of AR cloud computing and globally integrated & systemic internet of things (IoT) and the future of all of us and how we connect to each other & the world.

Here's Microsoft's messaging. Lots of
benefits listed, but try to find their WHY:

-Create multi-user, spatially aware MR
-Cross platform MR
-Add context to real world
-Accelerate decisions
-Infuse AI & protect your apps

Here's Magic Leap's messaging. Good luck NOT finding their WHY. Lots of great benefits and a heavy dose of WHY and Vision: https://www.magicleap.com/stories/blog/magicverse …pic.twitter.com/y3yXN3URNC

The competition here is healthy and encouraging to see. It means cheaper hardware, better quality and faster adoption. As a designer, developer, and entrepreneur, I'll benefit from both products and their capabilities for different use cases.

I'm definitely a starry eyed idealist & optimist who heavily values these things. Not everybody does. As for me tho, I want to build a Star Trek utopian future. I want to see global & social leadership from the tech giants, not just feature sets & convenient integrated ecosystems

For Microsoft this is business as usual. Another vertical to expand, another piece of the Microsoft puzzle. For
#MagicLeap this is why they get up in the morning.Show this thread

I believe that aiming at the enterprise market (B2B & B2C) is a good movement. My guess it is less about the actual production cost of the device and more about waiting for some traction in the consumer ecosystem. The hungry for the continuous production of content is hard to get.

No doubt, enterprise is a smart move for any AR/MR company, it has its own unique challenges too. Enterprise makes great sense for Hololens2 And Magic Leap is engaging in enterprise action as well.

Microsoft made it clear what the "why" of HoloLens was with this one Tweet. It's made to empower people to make real, robust, flexible mixed reality applications without being locked in to one system.https://twitter.com/HoloLens/status/1099730513630093317 …

Thank you for including this REALLY important point. I loved hearing "We don't want devs to be dependent on Microsoft, we want devs to be independent *with Microsoft." Interoperability & multi-platform access is a shared belief/value of both ML & MSFT...but it's still not a WHY
