I tried on a Radeon HD 5850, and back then the difference between atomics and atomics counters was 100x. Atomic counters perf were close to the R9 290X.

I would have thought that atomicCounterAdd on AMD would have similar speed as atomicCounterIncrement, or at least be faster due to atomics going through those 8 special registers. And find nVidia's imageAtomicAdd just as odd as it should be the same path for all of them.
