The idea of having to work with that much vector data makes me feel a bit sick.

Great work! I've love to see a collapsing ring of max latitude reached by the top 5-10% of ships each year. Or # of ships reaching Y latitude by year. Must be an incredible database!
-
Thanks Josh! Others have suggested the moving max latitude ring as well. I think it's a great idea.

This is super important but the seasonal variations make it hard for me to see the overall trend.
-
Valid - I hope to fix that :)

Nice job. Is it based only on AIS messages sourced from SpaceQuest? Type 1-3 messages only? Or do you also have type 5 messages? If so, mean center by ship type & ship size trends would be interesting to see next.
-
Thanks! Here's more info: https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/91981/shipping-responds-to-arctic-ice-decline … | This gif shows SpaceQuest AIS data class A and B ships. We have a book chapter with all results coming out later this year.

How about a ring of latitude that marks the mean ships position that grows and retreats seasonally?
-
Nice. Thanks!
