When I attended the Cornish Jazz Program , they broke the curriculum into Music Theory (primarily for melodic and harmonic structures), Rhythm (for rhythmic sight reading and performance training), Ear Training (for recognition and sight singing), etc. Salsa is rhythm!

It is, yes - I guess I meant more in terms of the cultural/historical component of music training. Latinx, Caribbean and much other highly complex world music is rarely mentioned, in favor of the Eurocentric/western timeline

Even a minor pass at euclidean rhythm structures (something I now think of as a fundamental) will open your mind so much to a wealth of other styles. Understanding the variances and differences of base rhythms lays an amazing foundation for everything.

Thanks folks. After some personal setbacks, I'm slowly making my way back to music. If you're interested, I managed to recover my post for 2015 about Euclidean Rhythm construction using pocket coins. Probably helpful for students as a desk exercisehttps://thewoodandwire.wordpress.com/2020/01/11/using-euclidean-rhythms-to-create-new-beat-patterns/ …

I have learned more through YouTube, Wikipedia, and a handful of other resources than I have in my entire collegiate level music theory class
