Curious how so? because it flattens the stereotype?
-
I used to stress out about having to dress/talk a certain way at tech events because I was worried that ppl wouldn't take me seriously. It was liberating once I started presenting my genuine self. The valley girl tech talker is someone who isn't afraid to be their genuine self.
-
They don't care that the valley girl drawl isn't what you'd expect from a tech talker. They know that their content is solid and that they're technically sound, and they happen to have a valley girl drawl too and they're not going to stress out trying to hide it. It's powerful.

you nailed it! well said.

Vocal fry makes me want to stab my ears with an icepick.
-
no one cares!

Please choose empathy, here. Misophonia is real. Vocal fry acts a trigger for some people. Saying, "I dislike that sound you make," is a statement, and is distinct from a judgment (e.g., "I dislike you.").
-
He didn't say he disliked it, he likened it to personally mutilating him. Hyperbole is fun, but using it to describe your dislike for something someone naturally has is hostile for no reason
-
He's the one that needs empathy in his messaging
-
@hainesr said the sound makes him want to self-mutilate. He made a statement, distinct from a judgment. -
My wife suffers from misophonia. (Vocal fry is not a trigger). I know
@hainesr's statement seems hyperbolic to you—and maybe his intent—but to people who suffer from misophonia, declarations of desire to self-mutilate are, unfortunately, not always hyperbolic. :-( -
That's awful, I'm sorry she has that. You are a very empathetic person, and I admire that. His message seems more like a troll than anything and I'd wager your wife would actually use better words than how he did. Like I said, empathy goes both ways
