I've never been involved in any media project like this. In journalism, you struggle just to stay afloat. Something is changing in media & I'm fortunate to be part of it.

Tech founders who get journalism? “One of the issues with tech recently has been a lot of these companies’ unwillingness to make subjective judgments in the name of quality and progress for humanity,” Systrom says.“Right? Just make the hard decision.”

The TSLA stock price collapse is unlike anything I’ve seen since the great internet bubble popped in 2000. A year ago it was $400/shr. Today? $110. It’s down +50% in the 2 mos since Elon bought Twtr. That’s $900b market cap gone YTD. Has any other co lost more value in a yr ever?

Elon has set fire to more than $340 billion since he bought Twtr on 10/27. That’s GDPs of Denmark or Singapore. TSLA might be the worst performing big stock in the entire equity market since then. It’s down 45%. A total round trip from 8/2020. And for what? Astonishing.
7
For those keeping score, TSLA is down 5% today and 38% since Elon bought Twitter.

Shocking how the Silicon Valley titans who gave us social media - the free speech absolutists - can be so against free speech when their creations turn on them. Somehow I expected more consistency from these anti-elitist, populist paragons of virtue … Not!

Elon has set fire to enough money since he’s owned Twitter and cratered Tesla’s stock price, to equal the GDPs of Portugal or New Zealand. That’s $250-$300 billion. Been writing about biz-tech for decades. Never seen anything like it.

Good lord. I worked for McLaughlin in my early 20s and eventually had to testify against him in a sexual harassment trial. He was an unrepentant sexist & truly the cruelest boss I ever had. The show was utterly cooked, scripted to be like pro wrestling. I know cuz I scripted it.

Some if/then, mgt. 101, coder truth: Give your staff an ultimatum to commit to 80-hr-weeks or leave, and the ones who quit are the ones you want to stay, and vis-versa.Why? The “A” performers are in demand everywhere, so they quit. The “B”s worry about unemployment, so they stay.

Most novelists I know think like artists. Tech. scares them. Many geeks I know ask “Why is writing SO painful?” My friend Vikram is that rare exception: Famous novelist AND coder, along w/ professor at Cal. Here’s a thread of the tools he uses to do his work.

Reality: Im less scared of DeSantis as president than Trump because even though he's an autocrat in waiting, he's not mentally ill or stupid. But hed be a lousy national candidate. And he would lose the nomination to the unelectable Trump. So Trump is still gum in the GOP's hair.

Re FTX - The only entities in finance immune from liquidity crises are banks. Sure they’re regulated. And bankers gripe about those regs. But they also know it’s why over time they endure while everyone else dies. Crypto won’t be mainstream until it gets regulated too.

This is a brilliant thread about Twtr but also the past Silicon Valley decade in general. Yes, others have said similar. But has perspective few other have. Read it. twitter.com/sacca/status/1

Can someone capture what’s been happening on this platform the past few days? It’s meta? Recursive? But some compelling real time journalism/reaction/bearing witness happening here too. It’s what we thought these platforms might be good for during M.E revolutions 10-15 years ago.

Network effects created Twitter almost overnight. But as Elon will soon learn, they work just as fast in reverse too. Zuck is learning that right now Re FB.

closed out the reading with a WIP essay about… writing essays. He talked about his experiences teaching inmates at San Quentin and how he coaches high school students on writing college essays, drawing from his own experiences. SO INSPIRING 🥺🥺6/6

Almost fell for a leather backpack scam on FB. Now I’ve seen 20 ads just like them in the past hour - as though I gave the FB algorithm coitus interruptus. Maybe I should worry.

In the words of Jeezy, “I put on for my city,” and in return, this city reminds me I’m seen, respected, and supported—often.
I’m forever grateful that I’ve been able to help build something rooted in this city that I love like no other.

Yes, digital tech has mucked up our lives in so many ways. But it’s also given us “Fat Bear Week.” And that is a beautiful thing.
