    The thing is, if the govt's problem with the Protocol was primarily about ensuring frictionless movement of goods from GB to NI, they would be trying to address that problem. But they aren't.

    Just take a moment to consider what is happening here. A prominent journalist was killed by Israeli police/border guards/army. And today the Israeli police are attacking her pall bearers and other mourners.

    Everyone switch on to Al Jazeera right now. This is one of the most horrifying things I’ve seen. IOF is attacking mourners carrying Shireen’s body from the hospital right now. They’re using stun grenades and tear gas and charging at them with horses and batons.

    Light a fire. Stoke the fire. Pour some petrol in it. And then use the massive blaze as an excuse to stop all fires. Rinse. Repeat. This is the reality of Israel’s policy and actions against Palestinians.

    The anger generated by Israeli behaviour right now risks or is even designed to trigger a major Palestinian uprising. It is not the worse part of the Israeli occupation but so indicative of the cruelty and vindictiveness of the Israeli authorities towards Palestinians.

    For those who will have missed it: Baroness Mone’s house was raided by police investigating dodgy PPE procurement. This seems to have worried the Goverment so much that they’d rather keep in the news (via “”) than let public attention turn to the police raid.

    And yet the news cycle has been successfully stuffed with 'beergate' (rather than say the police raid on Mone), because it's an editorial choice to create a false equivalence of 'they're all at it' that's been enabling corruption of our political system since the expenses scandal

    It would be naïve to assume that the people trying to whip the public into a frenzy over Starmer’s beer, hadn’t had leaked reports that the Met were about to issue another thick sheaf of penalty notices. Reminder: there is no equivalence, here. Not morally, not legally.
