u kno when u were like 15 and u were talking to any adult man and you would say "like" in between a couple words and hed immediately start mocking your entire speech pattern and be like "like oh em gee lipgloss twilight!!" and you weren't allowed to punch him at all

i'll never forget the linguistics professor i had whose main lesson about language was: it changes, it's always changed, we're allowed to change it, ask your parents and grandparents why they don't say "thither" or "thine" anymore.

They always said - did he/she/you really say that?! Uhhhhh no. That’s why I said LIKE. It’s such a cool use of a word! And so weird anyone older than me doesn’t get it. I’m wondering now- did they use like said? And it evolved into like=thought/meant/insinuated? Whaaaat?
-
I couldn't count the amount of times this has happened to me. Like no, mum, obviously I didn't say that out loud or in the tone I just said it to you, I'm paraphrasing and/or giving you what my internal thoughts were at the time? No idea how older people convey this

actually this reminds me of some out-of-touch posh old guy I had to speak to once (I put it in a thread for ease of reading)https://twitter.com/futurefishy/status/1223058237798436866?s=20 …

"Bob was like" = "I shall now attempt to paraphrase the gist, not the utterance verbatim, of what Bob said in the following manner"

Great obseevation. It's like the "habitual be" in African-American Vernacular English. White people (especially older ones) always think it's just saying "be" for "is," but it has a specific meaning that doesn't really have any concise equivalents in English.

I put a lot of effort into explaining the difference to my dad literally 30 years ago. I would have thought people my age would get it by now.

Or they are for people who think before they speak instead of speaking and figuring out what they think by listening to what they’ve said.
