Aren't the last games of a given group played at the same time to avoid this kind of nonsense. Was it West Germany-Austria originally? There was supposed to have been an understanding that this kind of "gentlemen's agreement" is not legitimate. Very disappointing.

I wonder how to avoid this. It could maybe be a subjective call by the referee: "If, in the opinion of the referee, neither team is making an effort at playing with purpose, the game shall be deemed forfeited by both teams."

I find it very arrogant and ignorant of you guys complaining about the last three minutes or so in the game.. in any league teams go out with the sole purpose to defend and waste time to end up getting a draw against a better team and many teams start time wasting during the end

This wasn't one team closing up shop - it was both teams. If it's acceptable to you that neither team make an effort at playing, why bother to pay attention at all? In fact, why bother to even play a game? Shouldn't the teams just make a deal in advance and be done with it?
