one of the perks of being jewish is you get an all expenses paid guided tour of israel. i'm not making this up, they're called birthright trips. i took a prog jew trip, as the more religious ones spend the whole time praying and I wanted to see shit.
when we were in tel aviv, which is basically the poz containment zone, we were tasked with asking strangers about the day rabin was killed. most people said it was the darkest day of their life, with one older woman breaking down crying and saying it was day all hope died.
rabin was a messianic figure for the left. he was going to bring peace to israel and lead it into a more egalitarian future. his death completely took the wind out of the Israeli left. the right quickly took over and have established irreversible control since.
there is a curious dynamic that I think is true for every "end of history" millenarian progressive group. they can't really achieve full potential without a visionary messiah. I can't think of any lefty reign of terror where they didn't have one.
I know several people who lost relatives because of Rabin's action. I was young and apolitical when he was assassinated, but now I understand more. The man was a monster, all these generals turn into monsters when they get old.
Also we don't have actual right-wing people here. Israel is borderline socialist and infested with protectionist organizations and unions. What we have are different gangs of leftists, and some radical fringe elements to the left and the right.
yeah, on a proper dichotomy the left isn't dead. but most people think of egalitarian universalism when they hear left so i just roll with that. more accurate would be something like an overton window shift gutted the commies.
