The danger begins when people become just dumb enough to think they can outperform spontaneous order. The moment people start saying "we could do better" is the moment things begin to break.
"a great deal of ruin in a nation" implies the baseline of functionality is already idiotic. the only solid prediction anyone can give of the future is that it will only get more stupid.
