I love looking at how companies we admire got started. When starting a new tech venture, it was always illustrative to see how messaging, pricing, etc, evolve over time. A good reminder that everyone has to start somewhere! E.g., behold Heroku circa 2008

If I had been affected by the RIF (& thankfully I was not), I’d be jumping on this opportunity. I’m a fan of what is doing.

I've reached that stage in my career where anytime I commit some code, no matter how trivial, I invariably break something. Back to the slide decks and spreadsheets ... 😑

I love the new option for . No pods and nodes to manage, so it saves me time. Over the past weeks, I've used to build out my and this post isn't different. Adding Fargate to my cluster!

Too much focus on the "syntax" of infrastructure as code. We chose regular languages precisely because the syntax is the least interesting part. Why innovate? Real problems: the cloud is a dauntingly complex afterthought, failure modes egregious, and abstractions don't compose.

My wife, , who hated football until recently, jeering loudly in response to an injured player: "Ahh, COME ON -- I've had CODE REVIEWS worse than that!!!"

Refactoring prose is even more dangerous than refactoring code. There is no compiler to tell you when it works and is self-consistent. There are no acceptance tests to tell you when it's done. Speaking from experience: 4hrs in the weeds and counting, with no clear path out 😂

"Our standards for what is acceptable in infra space are much lower than the app dev space" -- talking to . What a great sentiment. Let's all raise our standards for IaC development in 2020, regardless of tool/lang choice.

The reason this works: * Open source is truly open. No hidden gotchas. No nefarious motivations. * SaaS is there because it actually provides value. People pay because they see the value. Not because they are strong-armed into it. Happy community, happy customers.

SaaS is a great answer to the "how to monetize open source" conundrum. The SaaS must have real value and the open source must be truly open. But it sidesteps artificial dynamics. calls this "open source 2.0" and it's working stunningly well for us.

Chris was my best friend and mentor. Pulumi is named after him, as he pushed me and Eric to do it. These emails instantly bring me back to his kindness — for anybody, anytime. Losing him taught me so much about the fragility of life and value of those we love. Thank you Jeroen ♥️

Sunk experience fallacy: The belief that past experience justifies behaviors that have worked in prior, different contexts, instead of rationally deciding based on present-day realities and evidence.

ICYMI, here's a Pulumi year in review post I wrote. It's mind-blowing to see an entire year's worth of progress summed up in one place. 15x growth in customers 😲 Amazing team, product, and opportunity. 2020 is going to be huge! 🙌
