An investigation by German outlet @wdrsportinside shows what it means to be a guest worker in Qatar's construction sites, including in those related to the 2022 World Cup, and what's the human cost of it all. A thread with their findings. (Warning: Difficult read) 1/19pic.twitter.com/BCiZ0nsb6U

According to WDR, all journalists wanting to film in Qatar must get the approval of the government. This time, though, a journalist was sent there without letting the government know. He was equipped with a hidden camera. Here’s what several guest workers told him. 2/19

The workers warn the journalist that undercover police and security forces patrol the area where they live. Interviews carried out with workers without the government's approval can lead to jail terms. 5/19

Let’s compare what the Qatari government wanted the reporters to see, and what WDR's undercover cameras caught. Here’s a street alley from where the journalists were allowed by the Qatari government to film. And here’s a similar street where they weren’t. 6/19pic.twitter.com/zqRboaq9w9

Here’s a typical room where the journalists were allowed to film in by the Qatari government. Four people, personal lockers, tidy. And here’s a similar room where they weren’t. Eight people, dirty walls, few toilet booths serve about 200 people, “smell of urine” 7/19pic.twitter.com/7eeYoH68VM
