In this story, the problem is not the server location. The problem is to retrieve personal data like the IP address without the user consent. This is not acceptable, politician app or not.

I know what Akamai is using for...and I know it’s very common to use. My point was just: why this app is using an American company for that? You don’t have an equivalent Indian company?

I recommend you to come up with some serious loophole/bug. Your trivial findings are being twisted by Indian media and parties who don't know cahoots about technicalities, wasting precious time of many people and creating false impressions.

What a weak argument... Nothing illegal in hosting something out of India. Where to host an application is decision of the owner.

And it's also legitimate to question that decision. Privacywise it's not a great one...

Everything is connected with Internet. Geological location arguments is bullcrap. This is like Aadhar CEO's 5feet wall argument. Would take lesser efforts to hack a half cooked Indian server than a reputed host like Azure, AWS, Akamai etc.

But the argument is about privacy. If the servers are in your country/territory, you're in control of the data on them

This exactly is a flawed argument. One only has access to the data if he Owns the server or has permission to access the same. Even it's illegal for hosting companies to access client's database, it's basic ABCD of data security..

I'm still not talking about security...that's an more difficult issue to generlize. Control != access. You rely on the US to act in case the company owning the servers misbehave.

It is a CDN Co. So IP address might be just to mask the real address from attacks. And there is no gud CDN providers in India.

Just look at mygov Indian gov official app and please read the terms. It clearly states that all the data and content are provided by nic and related gov agencies, but when you check the ip its of akamai situated in singapore. Isn't it a lie.
