is it necessarily censorship? it could also be the case that everything outside of china is potentially blocked / has a longer response time. This is just to test for a captive portal
G.cn is used instead of the "normal" url, g.cn is not blocked by China's great firewall. this part of the code's used to test "connectivity" on android, and displays a small "cross" on wifi/data icon if unreachable
ya, this is part of the captive portal detection. it simply looks for a known external host to see if requests are being denied by the network. but how does this show "Censorship at his best" ?
It's a consequence of the China's great firewall
and a good way to keep tracks of their citizens, just like Tencent getting shares and rights on popular games in China (LoL, Pubg) so they can use those datas to establish a "social credit score" (ie. https://futurism.com/chinas-new-social-credit-score-brings-dystopian-science-fiction-to-life/ … )
ok... but what is being censored???
The "g.cn" is probed by android devices in China, "g.cn" exists bcs of China's gr8 FW, China's gr8 FW is meant to give its gov a better control of internet in China, android connectvty checks have customisations for a country's means of censorship, using "g.cn" is not per se
the request is tested against whatever global setting is put in http://Settings.Global .CAPTIVE_PORTAL_SERVER ( https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/base/+/c80f952/core/java/android/net/CaptivePortalTracker.java#123 … ) it makes sense to use nearby hosts google trying to improve QoS in china isn't censorship...
You're not looking at the correct code. The code in NetworkMonitor had been modified, this is not the default AOSP code
