The fact that #WhatsApp is storing your attachments in the sdcard is pretty bad. Every app with the read_sdcard permission, which is very common, can access it. This is why, they need to encrypt your documents!https://twitter.com/jags1980/status/1035174046525054976 …

It only matters if they are encrypting the data during the communication/transmission or not. Isn’t it? If anybody has access to your SD card, then everything is anyway available unrestricted!

Baptiste, people commenting have no clue of how new attack vectors such as Man-in-the-Disk attack work.Your finding is relevant as any malicious application with read/write access to the external storage can access/modify files.

Or to store it in the private app storage in /data, only the app and root can access it then.

That comes with the trade-off of privacy vs utility. If someone is so concerned about their privacy then they should move on to any other app.

It is *obvious* whatsapp doesn't encrypt attachments locally, because they're visible in your gallery app. It's a feature not a bug. By your logic, the android camera app is pretty bad because it also stores images to sd card, accessible to all apps with read_sdcard permission.

If not in SD card then app size bloats on phone over the years of usage resulting in slowing down the app and phone and uninstalling the app would remove all your data along with the app?!

The metadata still reads as a TrueFont file, so anyone with the smallest amount of knowledge about filetypes can work out it was a TTF or similar.
