The point to be taken from the aphorism, and of many a similar good advice even from renown designers, is: Don’t just listen to your users, watch them instead.

Mike Maples, Jr.: "A pivot is: keep your proprietary insight, but find the right customer for that insight. Don’t let go of your secret." The metaphor of pivot is apt in that a pivot involves keeping your pivot foot on the ground as you move your body..."

Nice tribute to Clay Christensen : Silicon Valley failed to marry disruption with a concept of corporate responsibility — it became more about breaking things. The more measured approach Clay Christensen taught was ignored.

Architecture graduates many architects that, albeit not becoming “starchitects”, don’t go around designing unusable buildings. The trick? Keep training them. Education doesn’t end with graduation. So don’t blame the school, blame the culture and the ecosystem.

Increasing trend: people talking about policy and rules for 'data'. 'You own your data', 'data should be portable', 'there should be a EU market/rules/rules for data'. The problem with this: there is no such fucking thing as 'data' 1/

When the standard airline cabin was designed (the 707 in the early 1950s), flights were about 63% full. Now they're about 84% full. So the cabin you're flying in now has less than half as much empty space as its designers expected.

Jessica and I were talking about who in Silicon Valley has had the most effect in proportion to how well they're known, and we both picked the same person: Carolynn Levy.

A specimen of moral panic: blaming algorithms for our problems and imagining life without them. I'll tell you what this looks like: Mass media, all the same for everyone, without relevance, with many unheard voices, and desperate calls for attention: clickbait. It's what we left.

    2. A language problem: we keep fighting names and scopes that are internal to the profession, instead of using definitions and naming conventions as a way for other disciplines to see the value of what we offer. 2/

Design has two main problems: 1. An education problem: self-taught or bootcamp designers that learn to make things beautiful and pleasant and copy zeitgeist styles, and haven’t been taught the importance of understanding the user and what they think (not what they say). 1/
