    I wish instead of saying General Robert E Lee “owned slaves”, the terminology used was, “enslaved humans”. He didn’t actually own anyone, he held them against their will, and forced them to work. But he did not own them. He trafficked in enslaved humans.

    Lee freed some only during (not before) the war, and he also had his slaves whipped. He was not for immediate abolition and was certainly racist. Whataboutism about Grant is rather beside the point. His family did hold four slaves; he owned one personally--freed before the war.

    I attended undergrad in the heart of the confederacy and worked near the childhood home of Robert E. Lee. Quite frankly, no amount of military mastery nor tactical aptitude can absolve one of the horrors he committed. He is neither great nor honorable. This shouldn’t be hard.

    In my book, "The Lost Indictment of Robert E. Lee," I wrote about Lee's role in upholding the Confederacy's criminal policies towards Union African American prisoners. These policies were ignored immediately after the war, but should be more widely discussed today.
