My dad has a BA and BEd (4 years total). My mom attempted undergrad but only got a BA(Hons) when I was doing my MA. She then got her MA when I was doing my PhD.

I've seen people refer to being a "first-gen academic" to mean "not having PhD parents" so I'm really curious how common that is. Surely not very?
-
Doesn’t that usually mean first generation to go to university?

Why is have PhD parent(s) something to "fess up" to? Fessing up implies shame, embarrassment, and reluctance. I'm proud of my PhD parent. I don't hide it. I acknowledge it gives me privilege and that needs to be talked about, but "fessing up" to it feels insulting to his life.

I didn't mean it that way at all! I take your point but truly, it wasn't asked in that way. Thanks for pointing this out.

My dad was an academic. He had a handful of Masters degrees and two PhDs.

A handful, eh? Lol
