When I TAed in grad school, I submitted my final grades to the supervising professor, a gentleman I'd never met, and stated that I had attached an excel sheet with notes to clear up any "ambiguity" about interpreting the grades. Below is his reply:

In fact, the evidence on operant conditioning, environmental contingencies, and niche construction all contradict the notion that the environment is obstinate. The environment is a dynamical system, one that both changes and is changed by the organism.

Yes, but natural language is not just about information transmission. Language may be necessary for other cognitive domains, such as numerical reasoning, theory of mind, etc. Any language algorithm, then, must also account for these other (seemly non-linguistic) abilities.https://twitter.com/fchollet/status/1224378936391393280 …

Henri Poincare understood the importance of Relationism nearly a century ago. It's time we caught up: "The aim of science is not things themselves, as the dogmatists in their simplicity assume, but the relation among things; outside these relations there is no reality knowable.”

Overton (2013) on how Relationism overcomes dichotomies in science: "Context-free specifications of any object, event, or process-whether it be DNA, a cell, a neuron, evolution, the architecture of mind, or culture-is illegitimate within a holistic system" https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10888691.2013.778717 …pic.twitter.com/fxbPlmCJ7S

This semester I started doing vignettes of overlooked, but highly influential people in the history of comparative psychology/animal behavior. In this era of resurgent race "science" and innateness we need reminders of those who saw beyond these tropes, people like Ethel Tobach.pic.twitter.com/1hQ9ypHtlc

We have a theory. It's dynamical systems theory, and we are just waiting for the rest of the field to catch up.https://twitter.com/lakens/status/1217699479866019841 …

Internal models are a pervasive construct in the neurosciences. But is that really the right way to conceptualize perception-action systems? Lackner & Tuller (2008) on how we can recast internal models as dynamical systems.pic.twitter.com/d3xlm98n5G

Blumberg et al. on how "innate" spinal circuits in rats result from spontaneous twitching: "Our experiments show how patterns of twitching contribute to the self-organized differentiation of the most basic spinal circuits--circuits long considered innate:" https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0960982213005599 …pic.twitter.com/T2GPlTMvne

With resurgent online hereditarianism researchers need to accurately communicate how biological processes occur. An under-appreciated book is "Tools for Thought" by Conrad Waddington where he lays out how to think in systems, and how to apply systems thinking to development.pic.twitter.com/fXG4Ohv2AE

The
#AIDebate has re-invigorated the nature-nurture debate (e.g. innate priors, learnability) on Twitter. I fear, though, that regressing to this dichotomy fails to acknowledge the self-organizing & pattern-forming nature of ontogeny. Here, I return to van Geert (2003)'s remarks:pic.twitter.com/2YkN8E3TXX

There are an increasing number of studies showing transcriptional differences in genetically identical individuals very early in development though, and something has to be modulating this.https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2019.12.11.873265v1 …

These findings demonstrate how robust, species-typical behaviors that would appear to require "innate" knowledge may actually reflect non-obvious forms of experience. Moreover, multiple sources of non-obvious experiences can produce the same "instinct:"https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0003347205807936 …

The AI, ML, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Science communities have much to learn from ethology and comparative psychology re: nature-nurture, a dichotomy eloquently refuted by Lehrman (1953): https://psycnet.apa.org/record/1954-07089-001 …

The psychology-as-software and neural-systems-as-hardware metaphor ultimately fails, as neural systems change themselves through their own activity - activity involved in perception-action. Thus, for real neural systems, "software" and "hardware" are always inextricably linked.
