Freenet has git-over-freenet (and a more advanced mercurial-over-freenet) where you have clones identified by public key.

Aaron committed suicide after being sentenced to 35 years in prison by US authorities for transferring and sharing scientific articles from JSTOR.

Swartz was never convicted or sentenced to prison. After declining a plea bargain in which he'd serve six months in jail, he committed suicide before trial.

Like, when you see "crypto" advocates saying things will be "stored on the blockchain" - that problem has already been extensively solved by Freenet, which stores files versioned as encrypted fragments in a distributed network on its' users' machines.
