Went to see my car mechanic in Tenderloin today. He's in the middle of all the usual D6 action - dealers, homeless, addicts, garbage, needles. At 10AM there was a "walking dead movie set" feeling outside of his body shop. 1/

I asked him how long he's been in Tenderloin. He said 17 years. I asked him if he sees any difference in terms of criminal activity in the neighborhood between recent years and the time he moved in. He said, absolutely. 2/

He told me that his body shop was burglarized twice within the past year. The same person was involved, stole cash from the register, stole some tools. He said the thief is a fixture on his block, he knows her by name. She is a drug addict. 3/

He said he captured both burglaries on video where you can clearly see her face, even her tattoos! Showed it to cops. Cops asked him if there were any injuries, anyone got hurt. He said no and cops told him point-blank they won't deal with it, not worth the effort. 4/

I asked him how does he think the neighborhood has changed in general. He said most of the retail that was there left. Two different shop owners told him they left because employees complained about seeing dead bodies (overdosed) on the streets on several occasions. 5/

I asked him if he wants to leave, he said it would be too expensive and this is his only source of income. He can't afford it. Just like me, he is an Eastern European immigrant. 6/

He told me - look no one cares about people like us in SF, we are in the wrong category in this city - we are hard workers and we are of European descent, no one cares that we came here with nothing and built our business from the ground up and have zero back up. 7/

I know exactly what he means because I experience it in SF daily. The future of this city is gloomy and SFans can't blame anyone but themselves for consistently voting for leaders who destroy the soul of this city.
